Andrew Carnegie, the renowned steel magnate, an American, had an outstanding employee named Charles Schwab. Schwab started work in the steel company as a day labourer. But there was something different about him. Close observation revealed that Schwab always offered more service than that for which he was paid.

Now that resulted in rapid promotion for Schwab until he himself became president of the steel company. Schwab is proof that hard work pays. So going the extra mile has several advantages. It brings us to the notice of those who can facilitate our progress in our careers. It adds value to our own self-esteem.

It leads to expertise on our job. It builds people’s confidence in us It gains for us rapid promotion. It results directly in increased income-after some time.

Go a little beyond your contemporaries. Check back on your client regularly to ensure that your work is satisfactory. If you are a nurse, be exceptionally nice to your patients, they will keep coming back. If you are a shop owner, make extra effort to satisfy your customers. Whatever your profession, develop this habit today; to always do more than you are expected to do.

Don’t let what you cannot do keep you from doing what you can do. Like they say, when you start, the job is already half done. Don’t wait for extra-ordinary circumstances, use the ordinary ones available. Don’t wait till you have your own company before you become diligent. Work hard for someone else, and God will bring your own. A German proverb says; “ Grow where you are planted”.

Don’t sit down at home and call yourself jobless. Once upon a time, a young man came to the church and offered his services for free. After a while, he became so valuable the church employed him. Today, he is a Pastor.
