Faced with the challenge of setting the pace in the media and entertianment industry, Daar communication plc yesterday launched its multichannel television station “Daarsat”. Daarsat is the brand of Nigeria ’s pioneer independent broadcast company known by its popular brands African Independent Television (AIT) and Ray Power 100.5 FM.

This development is coming 6 months after it’s sucessfull initial public offering which ended in march this year. Speaking at the official listing of N8 billion shares of the company on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange in Lagos, chairman of the company, Raymond Dopesi said that the company decided to go into digital broadcasting after the presidential approval given last January.
He said that much of the proceeds of the initial public offering was channelled to this effect.
According to Dopesi, “Daar Group is currently investing aggressively towards the realization of our key visions. A total of N19.3 billion has been invested in critical areas of our core business that will deliver medium and long-term range benefits and returns to investors and clients”. He stated further that the television would be taking off with a minimum of 40 top leading global television channels plus a number of top flight local channels. The 40 channels would cut across sports, lifestyle, news, fashion, movies and music. The pay station would among others introduce the latest compression technology with MPEG4 which gives it the capability to introduce real high definition programming to Nigerians.

The group’s asset base is in excess of N30 billion while the shareholders’ fund stands at N11.1 billion with N644 million as total reserve.
Dopesi pointed out that these figures do not include the proceeds of the initial public offer concluded by end of March and assured stakeholders that as soon as the offer proceeds were injected in the diverse communication business, remarkable returns would be achieved in line with the projections made during the IPO for the period 2008 year end through 2010.
