A review of the company news released by the Nigerian Stock Exchange on Friday 3rd July, 2009 indicates that more companies are resolving to corporate actions (bonus and dividend declarations) in a bid to compensate investors for relatively stagnant prices in recent times. The Directors of six out of ten companies that released their final score cards during the week ended Friday 3rd July, 2009 are proposing dividends ranging from 2k to N5.20 for their share holders.

African Petroleum Plc is to give investors on its register as at July 3rd, 2009 N5.20 per share on July 27, 2009 while May & Baker Nigeria Plc is promising its investors 40k per share on August 10, 2009 although the company’s register would be closed for this purpose on July 16, 2009. Trans-Nationwide Express Plc and Associated Bus Company Plc are rewarding their shareholders with 10k per share while Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc is offering its investors 3k per share to be paid on September 7, 2009. Staco Insurance Plc and Regency Alliance Insurance Plc are both offering one bonus share for every existing 10 shares in addition to 2k dividend.

Chevron Oil Nigeria Plc also released its audited result for the year ended 31st December 2008 without a mention of dividend. On the contrary, the company declared a loss after tax of N225.42 million compared with profit after tax of N1,959.32 million in 2007. The Board of Directors had earlier attributed the change in fortune in the company to industrial strike actions by Transport Union and Employees.

@ NWANGWA ORJI CHIMAOBI, First bank is proposing 1 for 6 bonus. Register closes on Monday, 20th July 2009.
For online trading; enquire from your broker to what extent they support online operations. Full 100% online service is not yet possible in Nigeria since most brokers in-house software cannot directly connect to the NSE’s ATS.
