The major problem was from lack of strategic plan. They were mainly in the importation business just like UACN. With time, for a lot of reasons, that became a not too lucrative sector. Due to lack of alternative plan of action, they became a loss making venture. When UACN realised the problem, they excise UAC properties and venture into food with Mr BIGGS becoming the money spinner. AG Leventis started late in this area hence the situation they've found themself.

Also in terms of manpower development, they've not done well.

In terms of manufacturing, they also are not doing well. They are mainly involved in importation which became so unprofitable with the devaluation of teh Naira and reduction in disposable income of Nigerians.

Generally, all the conglomerates who are mainly into importation suffered the same problem. Just check out UTC, John Holt and CFAO.
They do not have visionary and strategic managers.

UACN suffered the same fate, but by year 2000, the turnaround was started by Mr. Ayo Ajayi, UACN was spun-off, they shifted focus on food, made strategic investment in some subsidiaries that are into Logistic, Agriculture, Paint, Banking etc.
Now an investment of 1 million Naira made in UACN betwen 2001 and 2002 is now worth over 70 million Naira in May 2013 this does not include dividends received over the years.

In the business world, you either innovate or you die, I think this is what is happening to old big companies like CFAO, SCOA, Leventies and John Holt.

John Holt used to be a major investor in a foremost Investment Bank in Nigeria, that is NAL Merchant Bank. This bank has produced a number of Billionaire Investment Bankers, Bank MDs/CEOs eg Atedo, Adeola, Adeosun, Adegbite etc who can buy John Holt many times over.

The former NAL Bank Plc was the pioneer merchant bank in Nigeria, which commenced banking operations in 1960 as Nigerian Acceptances Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of John Holt (Liverpool) Limited. In July, 1969, NAL merged its operations with those of Financial Holdings (Nigeria) Limited, then trading under the name of Phillip Hills Nigeria Limited.

I'not sure about the highlighted part. FT.com shows 56.3% cumulative 5-year return on UACN

I have done the maths. UAC has done very well indeed. An investment of N1miilion made on 1 January 2001 at a price of N2.5 per share and held throughout until yesterday 30 May 2013 will be worth N36.25 million plus N5.7 million earned cumulatively in gross cash dividends.

Here is the maths (arithmetic really)

UACN Plc

Growth of Investment of N1,000,000 in 1 January 2001 to 30 May 2013

Date Price Units Cost value Dividends Per share

1-Jan-01 2.5 400,000 1,000,000 Nil
22-May-02 60,000 0.15
23-May-02 140,000 0.35
19-May-04 240,000 0.6
27-Oct-04 Scrip 100,000 -
19-May-05 250,000 0.5
18-May-06 425,000 0.85
17-May-07 500,000 1
23-May-08 850,000 1.7
20-May-09 - 1,000,000 2
16-Jun-10 Scrip 125,000 - 650,000 1.3
15-Jan-11 687,500 1.1
