Default Discovery Fund vs IBTC

Is anyone invested in the Discovery Fund or in the IBTC equity fund? How is the performance? Any good returns?

Someone not long ago introduced me to IBTC equity fund. He put in 100,000 and after 3months, its value was about 122,000 expecting about 90% profit in a year. I am relatively new with ibtc having invested this month. They also have a new one Ibtc ethical fund, i hope to go for this one later. I do not know about Discovery you mentioned...any light?

So it seems. The advertised returns are quite encouraging. Check www.thisdayonline.com

The Discovery Fund is a product of ARM, a division of GTB. It competes favourably with IBTC Funds.

ARM is NOT a division of GTB, at least not anymore, since GTB divested sometime late last year or earlier this year.

Wendy, so what's the current position? Discovery Fund is still on or not? Is ARM a stand-alone project presently.

Thanks people here.

Discovery Fund is still on. GTB did not offload their shares in ARM. What has happened is a separation of management. I refuse to be fooled that ARM is no longer a division of GTB. All those arrangements are means of hedging against future developments in the finance industry.

Hum, that is intresting to know that ARM is no longer a sudsidiary of GTBank. But I think the ARM management is fairing so good. Perhaps, I can see their tyrnaround of RTBriscoe.

Hello namdo, I am new to this site, and also very new to investing in Nigeria. I have just picked up from various sites that ibtc is quite a good fund to invest in. Could you tell me how easy it was to do this as I am not based in NIgeria. Do I have to get relatives to do this for me, or can it be done online. I've been trying to contact them all day, to no avail.

I have just done it!!! I can't believe it was so easy. IBTC had a purchase order form online and a US dollar account to which funds can be transferred.

Discovery Fund and IBTC are both mutual funds. The difference btw them is not much.

Mutual fund are very good for beginners, I started with them but cashed out after a year or two.

Mutual funds produce mediocre result although they are more secure than individual stock portfolios.

@naijainvestor, Congratulations. IBTC also has a stockbroking arm (IBTC Asset Management Limited) which you can switch to when you are ready for individual stocks and not just mutual funds.

Thanks to Information Technology and Internet. I have managed my Bank and stockbroking Accounts for 3 months outside Nigeria and it was superb.

The fund's performance since launch in July 2004 has been noteworthy. Investors can retain holdings

Default IBTC tops Discovery

I'v been an investor in the discovery fund since 2004 and that led me to constantly monitor their performances. To be honest with you, IBTC and DFund are not in the same class! IBTC is more aggressive and leaves Discovery miles behind - around N140 to N200 for DFund vs around N5500 to N10000 for IBTC within the same period.
The diff however is that DFund needs low start-up capital, N20000 vs IBTCs N50000. However if you've got dough (N100,000), I'l advice you to put your mney in ARMs Aggressive Growth Fund which is doing quite well. U can get info on that in DFunds offices.

Thumbs up Comparing apples and Oranges

Unfortunately, because there are not a lot of mutual funds in Nigeria the IBTC and Discovery Fund (DF) www.armdiscoveryfund.com are unfairly compared and IBTC www.ibtc.com comes out on top.
The DF is an asset allocation fund with equities, real estate and fixed income while the IBTC fund is 90% equities and an aggressive fund. They are 2 completely different products and shouldn’t be compared.
If you are seeking high return, high Alpha then go with the IBTC fund. If you want something more conservative and want to sleep at night :-) then go with the DF.
Both companies have an excellent reputation in terms of management and track record. ARM www.arm.com.ng also has an Aggressive Fund that is comparable to the IBTC fund; however, the ARM aggressive fund is privately managed and not public. Min investment is N100K.

naijainvestor,
Did you fund your account via wire transfer or Bank Draft/Cashier's Check payable to IBTC offshore account?

Interesting contribution, AI. As you note, ARM is involved in Real Estate, and quite heavily in the Lekki axis; I wonder what they do with all the money raked in from plots sold to investors about two years ago? I suspect they're playing lots of it in the stock market as there's not been very significant delivery on their real estate promises. Were they to break-down their exposures to equities, fixed income and real estate, the picture may be clearer.
