Corruption is BAD. However, corruption is not the reason why we are where we are. It has more to do with the fact that we are not creating enough wealth! Even if there is no leakage in the oil industry, our production when compared with our population shows that we are a 'poor' country. That is the reality that we dont want to accept. Gabon is 'richer' than we are. Oman produces close to 1Mbopd BUT it's population is less than 10% of ours! Angola's production is comparable to ours BUT its population is like a quarter of ours. When you compare production per capita, we are one of the lowest.

People gte carried away when they hear that we are one of the LARGEST EXPORTERS forgeting that the reason why we export so much is due to our low level of infrastructure/development. Close to half of our export is 'imported' back as refined petroleum. With the right development and infrastructure, our export will reduce by 50%

We need to face reality and tighten our belt!

This is interesting! How do we create wealth? From air? Corruption inhibits wealth creation. I'll explain. Philomena is a subsistence farmer. She grows maize. She has ambitions to expand and mechanise. Unfortunately, thieves steal her produce just before she harvests. Again, the income from the little she harvests is stolen by her husband to drink local gin and alcohol. The harder Philomena works and the borrows, the less she gets. Eventually, she withdraws her kids from school to assist on the farm. With very little income, she is unable to expand or create wealth. She is trapped in a debt vortex!

Philomena is Nigeria. Income that could have gone into provision of infrastructure, healthcare, education has been looted or stolen. It's all about the opportunity cost. Every $1 stolen is a $1 less to improve people's lives and livelihoods. Also, a govt that ignores corruption (or encourages it due to gross incompetence) is more likely to make policy decisions that benefit the few not the majority. Attitude to corruption influences attitude to equality!

Unfortunately, we don't have the "right development and infrastructure" because of corruption, fraud and incompetence (Imagine DAM reporting NOI, wonders shall never end!!).

You just make up concepts as you please, attitude towards corruption relates to equality? How? Name one country that has over 50m people that doesn't have corruption? The fight against corruption isn't about jailing people it's about building checks and balances into the system and this government is doing that

If you are ambivalent towards corruption (which involves a few taking for themselves what belongs to all), how can you advance the principles of equality?
There is no corruption free country. However, countries with the 'cleanest' govts generally have citizens with a relatively high standard of living. I have not said we need to totally wipe out corruption (though that would be a good ideal) to advance. However, the level of corruption/fraud/incompetence is inimical to development.
I'll like to know how e rank on the income-to-corruption basis. Very high I presume.

If you define corruption as only the rich stealing huge amounts of money then Nigeria would probably be one of the least corrupt countries.

So why do every country on earth have a criminal justice system? it is a no brainer that that checks and balances are not fail-proof. They do fail and in Nigeria they fail a lot. The next logical thing, then, is to make sure those that dupe the system are eventually brought to book!

thank you sir for this massive eye opener. for me, i have always wonder how come we are ranked so high, your explanation now put it in perspectives.

But, in the midst of a crushing global recession and a humongous unemployed population how do we create wealth as a Nation?

Nigeria's population is huge, if you add the next 2 most populous african country Eygpt and Ethiopia together, Nigeria is still bigger, with a slight female preponderance, most of which are reproductive!

some see a big market and cheap labour cost with this statistics-(its reason why oga nosa firmly believes the labour union is nigeria's main problem) but with the executhieves and the legislooters i don't see any wealth creation accruing to the country-- maybe into individual pockets.

We need to start calculating things on a percapita basis so we can put things into perspective. Nigeria doesn't lose more money to corruption than say France only thing is that we use corruption as an excuse for everything.

Anyway I really don't want to be dragged into this discussion in a serious way because opinions are polarized. So let's keep doing it Gangnam style, and remember DAM is the cause of global warming.
