NOTHING typifies the frivolous, insensitive and completely inept leadership troubling Nigeria currently than the recent approval of a N2.2bn banquet hall for Aso Villa by the Federal Executive Council. Coming at a time when the country is buffeted by serious security and other challenges, it demonstrates that this government is not a thinking one. Just one of the dozens of eye-opening government expenses, President Goodluck Jonathan is proposing to build a party hall in the palatial Aso Villa while millions of Nigerians are hungry and jobless. Obviously the national assembly is jobless. It is not their business to intervene in private squabbles when there are laws to be made to better the lives of Nigerians and the courts are there. This Ifeanyi Uba obviously thinks he is a national asset.

Actually, this is a good point. I think we really have to have a wholesale rethink of our democracy. I am not sure free and free elections in Nigeria will produce the kind of leaders we need. I don't beleieve that all Adults should vote directly for Nigeria's President. What does an SSS3 student know about the kind of leader Nigeria needs. Certainly, in the US poppular vote does not produce the President (Al Gore would have won in 2000) and UK citizens don't actually choose thier Prime Ministers (Gordon Brown was certainly not elected by the UK citizens). Of course China has a more sohpisticated system of choosing leaders. If Fashola is a good leader, we should remember that in 2007, it was Tinibu that actually voted him in to office. One day, i will get round to writing an article on this.

Yea, I support the electoral college thing. Something like the chinese system, but not exactly. Presidency should not be a mass popularity contest.
