Inya (@inya01) still here on the MIDDAY DIALOGUE on 95.1 Nigeria Info Abuja.

Lets talk about MONEY for a few this hour

Yesterday, it was reported that the Federal Government spends Nine billion Naira (N9bn) annually on 10-aircraft presidential fleet.

It was also reported that the Vice Presidents residence will cost two billion naira (N2bn) and official residence for the Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives will cost three hundred million naira (N300m).

The Federal Executive Council met yesterday and approved the construction of a new city in Abuja as part of activities to mark Nigerias centenary celebration slated for 2014.

There have been more stories on government spending on various projects.

The pertinent question here is, do you consider this a waste of resources? If Yes, how do we really cut down on needless waste of scarce resources?

Punch may be paid for these attacks, but the truth is that these wastefulness is real and sad.
Much hope was placed by Nigerians on a once shoeless fellow because it was felt he had lived the hard knock life and will be on the side of the people.Unfortunately he is on the side of the betrayers and have continued the same old culture of reckless rape of Nigeria.
His paid agents that come to this fora will always claim that IBB and OBJ did same . That is true , but the former never played any “shoeless” sentimental story with the psyche of Nigerians. To say the least Nigerians placed no hope IBB, OBJ as they placed on GEJ.
But lets us remind him and his agents from this little excerpt on the Malian once Vice President, of what Poor stricken Nigerians thought they were getting from him, GEJ when they trooped out to elect him.
See excerpts from Nigerian Guardian about Malian Vice President that also became a president. She is being internationally recognized now as one of top 100 Global thinkers.

“When Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika died of a heart attack in April, it wasn’t immediately clear what would become of his vice president, Joyce Banda …

Governing Malawi, where an estimated 75 percent of its more than 15 million residents live on N160 or less a day, presents enormous challenges.

But in just seven months, Banda has largely shown the world how to take charge and work to turn around a troubled country.

Within days of taking office, she dismissed key members of Mutharika’s administration, including the police chief in power when 19 Malawian demonstrators were killed at a 2011 opposition rally…..
Banda also secured a much-needed $157 million International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan in June, a first step toward rebuilding Malawi’s debilitated economy.

So far, all signs suggest Banda could become a new model for African leadership, shedding the strongman syndrome and getting down to business to help the poor. She has cut her own salary by 30 percent and put the late Mutharika’s $12 million presidential jet and most of his fleet of 60 luxury cars up for sale. “I can as well use private airlines,” she said. “I am already used to hitchhiking.

“I must demonstrate to Malawians that we are in this together,

“I must be the first person to set an example.”””’

Can GEJ and his agents tell Nigerians why he cant be our Knight in shining Armour and be on the side of his people instead of the side of the same old thie*ve*s.The Malian President is a woman but when the chips were down she made her choice – to be on the side of the people. She might as well have decided to do otherwise afterall there are 60 luxury cars and etc left behind by the former president joy . May God Bless her offspings.

Hence fort when Nigerians tel GEJ he is corrupt and clueless and no different from the formers he should know why they say so.
It is his choice once in life time opportunity to write his name in the sands of time.

Certainly, in the US poppular vote does not produce the President (Al Gore would have won in 2000) and UK citizens don't actually choose thier Prime Ministers (Gordon Brown was certainly not elected by the UK citizens). Of course China has a more sohpisticated system of choosing leaders. If Fashola is a good leader, we should remember that in 2007, it was Tinibu that actually voted him in to office. One day, i will get round to writing an article on this.
But then the SSS3 student can still vote for the "electors" who will "select" the President in an electoral college system? How is that very different from allowing the SSS3 student to vote directly for the President? If what you are advocating is raising the minimum age to vote, then yes I agree.

I hate the electoral college system in the U.S. If I am allowed to vote, then my vote should count (which it doesn't really in the US. It is pointless voting if you a republican in NY, just as it is pointless voting if you are a democrat in Alabama). I have had this discussion with my colleagues multiple times. Why do we think citizens are "stupid" and can't decide who their President is? Who says "electors" are more intelligent than citizens? In any case in the U.S, it is how the citizens vote that the electors usually cast their votes! So what is the difference? Gore (who the citizens chose) should have been the President, then at least we would not have had Bush Jr (who the electoral college chose ).

I do not believe that going either way (direct or non-direct) would result in "better" government in Nigeria.
