Second, this nation is littered with 3rd worlders and those people are VERY comfortable, accustomed, ok with having oligarchs (who are white) rule over them and commit massive corruption every single day.* In fact, in black-run cities, they virtually INSIST on having a corrupt leader.* Bonus points if he's black too.

Ordinary whites seem to believe blacks have the same innate notions of right and wrong and even same basic concept of how government works.* They don't. Most asians get this, but they have corruption issues as well.* Blacks don't conceptualize governance as representation, they conceptualize it as ownership, chiefdom.* It is not corruption to them, it is what the chief do with he property, as he see fit because it beez his.

There's no innate African concept of construction, building for the future, things are here and now, very non future time oriented.* We got 13% of them

I don't beleieve that all Adults should vote directly for Nigeria's President. What does an SSS3 student know about the kind of leader Nigeria needs. Certainly, in the US poppular vote does not produce the President (Al Gore would have won in 2000) and UK citizens don't actually choose thier Prime Ministers (Gordon Brown was certainly not elected by the UK citizens). Of course China has a more sohpisticated system of choosing leaders. If Fashola is a good leader, we should remember that in 2007, it was Tinibu that actually voted him in to office. One day, i will get round to writing an article on this.
I had always wanted to provide some of my thoughts but couldn't, so I let it go (hoping to read your article). However, with the Senate's actions today, I might as well.

In my view, the problem with our democracy is the total absence of ideology. More like the only ideology is the ideology of personal enrichment. Since the days of SDP and NRC (not advocating 2-party politics), it's been impossible to place any of our political parties as either left or right of centre. More like leprous fingers! They have simply become a mishmash of political jobbers, opportunists, also-rans and hired hands. Politicians interested only in one thing; themselves. Men and women of no ideology and principles. This is further compounded by the sad realisation we operate a "press statement" opposition. Weak and largely ineffective. Known more for their series of press statements by, with due respects, relatively 'unknowns'. A feudal opposition! Why they don't get their big hitters (and likely presidential candidates) to constantly tour Radio stations and TV newsrooms to communicate alternative policy ideas in addition to criticising govt actions is beyond belief. The opposition needs to become professional! Our democracy needs a strong opposition.

Going forward, friends of democracy would have to work together to provide ideas (and encourage others to do same) on how the external opposition (ACN, CPC etc) and the internal opposition within the ruling party can be strengthened. How, for example, can they apply lessons from successful corporate mergers, especially where different business cultures are involved. How can they run a well oiled party secretariat and campaign. How to brand, communicate and oppose effectively. How to form coherent policy. How to look like a govt in waiting etc.

So while I agree that work needs to be done on the grassroots, we shouldn't ignore the political class itself. This, I commit to in 2013.
