Default The hunt for olden days items.

Nigerians are trully amazing. This country has never seized to confuse me at every turn. There is a craze now among the youths in this country about the 'supposed' value in items used in years past. This fad has become so strong that every young man/woman is into it and I cant seem to understand why. The items they are rushing around looking for are;

The old pendulum wall clock (wooden casing)
Old telephone (the type you dip your finger into the button and dial round)
Old black and white TV (those types with four standing legs and closable doors)
The heads attached to the poles of those old spring beds.
Old bottle of coca cola (used in the early seventies)

They promise up to 4 million naira for anyone that could provide them with some items on the list. Many have lost time and money making connections to get those items. They say there are foreign buyers waiting to pay for them. Houses have been raided, clock repairer's shops have been burgled and even a boy was shot dead while trying to rob a family in the hope of collecting the wall clock.

Have you guys heard about this and how possible is it that those itms can fetch as much as that.

I know the pendulum clock was a fad I witnessed in the early nineties. Funny thing is that the same thing went through my mind today when I signed on to Nairaland earlier today and saw an advert promising to pay N1M to someone that delivers the clock to the buyer in Benin.

well a lot of precious metals did not become precious until recently (for example platinum) when demand outstripped supply and this means some old products used a lot of these metals which is what they want to extract, but the prices that's being offered does not make economic sense.

Does any of the above mentioned items contain platinum?

I doubt these have anything to do with platinum.

From what I gathered, they're after some quantity of mercury in the items, especially the clock pendulum, gramophone and TVs. I, also, I'm partly sure its drug dealers that are interested in the items.

The truth or falsity of the above is what I can't tell....

This is really interesting just last week my junior brother came to the family house to pick the old telephone we used in the 1980s, that he wants to use some parts inside to repair his mobile phone. Na so the guy collect the 2 handsets.

Mercury is a dangerous chemical... and if indeed it is going to be added to drugs so that they can pass through airports securities, then there is big trouble for drug addicts. They are going to start dropping off very soon.
