Let's be content with this token as this money could have been spent buying jets or renovating GEJ's official residence. Its a good starting point. The next wave of phones should be for the market women.

Minister: Hello Mallam Sule, it's Minister here Sule: Minister, kai, dat cassava bread still dey worry me. Abeg give us maize bread. Minister (interjects): I don't have time for that. How are you? Sule: Fine sir, my battery don dey finish. (occasionally, Sule speaks through an interpreter, my broken no good ). I had to return the car battery I used to pump water on my corn field so I couldn't charge my phone.Minister: Ok. Anyway, I called to tell you govt will be buying new phones for farmers to make you more productive. Sule: Oga, seeds dey inside da one? How dey dem plant am? Minister: No, you'll use the phone to receive weather alerts. Sule: Ok, before the weather arrives or after? Minister: Don't be silly. Of course, after the event! We are not God. Even if we could send it before, you won't have to credit to pay for it. Sule: Sir, why not use the money to help us irrigate our farms? Minister: Didn't the floods reach you? If it didn't, wait for your turn Sule: Haba Oga. Anyway, we can only make/receive calls at the district head area. My son says you can cut corruption by paying the telcos directly to fund use of and development of apps (like farm produce business directories, auctions, services etc). Minister (cuts in): Look, I didn't come for lecture. We just need your number. 2015 isn't far. If you don't get weather alerts, you'll get campaign alerts. Add fura to that bread, it might taste better. Bye (call ends)

1. Use financial products from commercial banks or MFBs? 2. Have access to market price information? 3. Use real time weather information? Presumably, all GES farmers had prior warnings about the recent flood? 4. Did the minister conduct any market research (or interview) with rural farmers before concluding on this initiative. No wehere in his statement did he suggest this was what the farmers wanted. 5. If the N60B been mentioned in the media is wrong? What is the correct figure? Has the minister considered the option of partnering with the Ministry of Health (and Primary Health Care providers) in delivering the benefits of his scheme at a significant fraction of the cost? This is a more wholistic approach and cost-saving approach to rural empowerment and development than his proposed giveaway. Again wouldn't spending N60??? billion on irrigation systems and transportation networks have a more significant impact to productivity than his scheme? Why not initially focus on raising the overall productivity base before focusing on 'efficiency'? In any case, why can't Dr Adesina trial his scheme on the existing GES customer base? His scheme is unproven and definitely very expensive. To spend N60?? billion on "a wing and a prayer" is not prudent. Finally, before advancing the benefits of technology to farmers, perhaps the minister should first avail his ministry the benefits of technology. A well-resourced website would be a good starting point...
