Garcinia kola, bitter kola (Guttiferae)
Garcinia kola, is found in moist forest and grows as a medium size tree, up to 12 m high. It is cultivated and distributed throughout west and central Africa. Medicinal uses include, purgative, antiparasitic, antimicrobial. The seeds are used in the treatment of bronchitis and throat infections. They are also used to prevent and relieve colic, cure head or chest colds and relieve cough. Also the plant is used for the treatment of liver disorders and as a chewing stick (Iwu 1993). The constituents include—biflavonoids, xanthones and benzophenones. The antimicrobial properties of this plant are attributed to the benzophenone, flavanones. This plant has shown both anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antiviral properties. Studies show very good antimicrobial and antiviral properties. In addition, the plant possesses antidiabetic, and antihepatotoxic activities (Maurice Iwu 1993). |

CAN one plant be used to boost the immune system against diseases, treat prostate problems including cancer, diabetes, mental illness and pain at the same time? Nigerian researchers have demonstrated how extracts of a local plant, Rauvolfia vomitara (asofeyeje in Yoruba, akanta in Ibo and wada in Hausa) improved animal’s immunity and enhances their hematology. The story published in North American Journal of Medical Sciences is titled: “Vitamin E supplementation with Rauwolfia vomitoria root bark extract improves hematological indices.” |

ONE sugary soft drink a day could raise a man’s odds of developing prostate cancer. A 15-year study found those who drank 300ml of a fizzy drink a day – slightly less than a standard can – were 40 per cent more likely to develop the disease than those who never consumed the drinks. Worryingly, the risk applied not to early-stage disease that was spotted via blood tests but to cancers that had progressed enough to cause symptoms. This is significant as faster-growing forms of prostate cancer are more likely to be fatal. It is thought that sugar triggers the release of the hormone insulin, which feeds tumours. |

The Swedish scientists behind the latest work said that while more research is needed before the link with prostate cancer can be confirmed, there are already “plenty of reasons” to cut back on soft drinks. For the study, they tracked the health of more than 8,000 men aged 45 to 73 for an average of 15 years. The men, who were in good health at the start of the study, were also quizzed about what they liked to eat and drink. |

A study from Harvard Medical School found men with beer bellies had a higher chance of developing osteoporosis, a disease usually associated with older women. The condition makes bones more prone to breaks as they lose density. Over a third of women have one or more bone fractures because of osteoporosis in their lifetime, however so do one in five men. “Most studies on osteoporosis have focused on women,” study leader Dr. Miriam Bredella said. “Men were thought to be relatively protected against bone loss, especially obese men.” |

To check this assumption, Bredella and her team of researchers evaluated 35 obese men with a mean age of 34 and a mean body mass index, a measure of body fat, of 36.5. The men were divided into two groups: one with mainly subcutaneous fat, which lies just beneath the skin and is spread all over the body, and the other with mostly visceral or intra-abdominal fat, located deep under the muscle tissue in the abdominal cavity. Visceral fat, which is what causes the pot belly even in thin people, is far more menacing because the fat is packed in-between the inner organs and is strongly linked to heart disease. Genetics, a high-fat diet and a sedentary lifestyle all contribute to visceral fat. “What surprised us most was that men with visceral fat had significantly weaker bones than (the subcutaneous fat) group. These are men with the same degree of obesity and who were about the same age,” Bredella said. |

There are several benefits of walking. Some of them are as follows-
Walking regularly at a good speed improves your muscle strength and endurance and also helps build stamina. It is good for your heart. Walking is known to reduce your blood pressure, improve your blood circulation and all round cardio vascular functions. Walking is said to be good for your bones. It is a great way to strengthen your bones. Walking about 30 minutes a day increases your bone density and slows down bone loss in your legs. This low-impact exercise is also said to target your spine, legs and hips. It promotes mental well-being. Known as a great stress-buster, if you walk outdoors, the combination of fresh air and exercise is an excellent way to boost your morale and mood. Helps prevent type 2 diabetes. Studies have revealed that walking approximately 150 minutes per week can reduce the risk of diabetes. Reduces the risk of colon and breast cancer. Last but not the least, walking is said to be safer than running. Fitness experts are of the opinion that walking is better for your knees and joints as compared to running. It leads to fewer injuries and is said to be a good beginner workout. |

We have to thank Fashola for this, a lot of Lagosians are now good walkers since the ban on Okada became effective in Lagos. Last edited by emmanuel ewumi; 11th December 2012 at 03:01 PM. |
