The Challenge ends 18th of June 2008. The positions shown are how the contestants stand as at the last price update which is the previous trading day.

As the stock prices change, the positions of the contestants will change as well, depending on their performance.

now the issue is, the time frame between selection of stocks and commencement of the competition matters alot.
using myself as a case study, as at the time i chose oceanic bank, it was about N19, that was shortly after they concluded the PUBLIC OFFER, now the time the SMN challenge commenced, it was N32!!!!!!!!!, i dnt think i can buy oceanic bank at N32.
the point i try to raise is this, the market dynamic is so fast, although companies fundamental remain steady, if we will do another one say starting in july, we should find a way to make the time frame coincide,so that such thing will not reoccur.
well, i still think before june, i have good chance of doing better.
its a good challenge.
i also think we should have another version for new guys in the stock investment, so as to increase their forsight AND ways to build a good portfolio
GOOD WORK!!!!!!!!!!

the challenge started last year, it was based on invitation and selection, i guess.
as the administrator mentioned, it will end in june, i expect that we review the year, then start another one hopefully.

its a virtual investment, no real money, we were all given 1m to invest, so on your own you can do it, but i hope we repeat the challenge and other guys are given the chance to compete

Default Right Speculation Pays More Than Fundamental

Natty's portfolio shows making the right speculation is far more rewarding than days researching to get the right fundamentals. In other wards it may be better researching out insider information than fundamentals. Real food for thought.

Thumbs up Information...

I would rather put it this way- Natty’ profolio show that if one harnesses all the information available to good use, it pay off… The guy is double ahead man, you got to salute.

His picks make total sense to me… I think over 12 months period, information was available to everyone. Not just speculation or insider information.

We dwell too much on this fundamentals and technical stuff too much. Minus a handful of the NSE blue chips, I really do not think fundamentals will says it all now on the NSE.

Anything oil sector has globally done well (not only in Nigeria). If you add all the local content efforts made in last few years, it makes it better. Without having full details, one can assume that any company doing business directly in the oil sector or providing support service will do well (as long as the company is not dead. Nigeria has made tons of money over the last 5-7 years because of oil prices, but Nigerian oil has also become geopolitically and strategically more important over the same time.

Everything related to oil on the NSE in last 18 months has gone up.

Natty, “reasoning in construction is “Building of Roads, Houses, bridges etc will definitely translate to good market for companies like G Cappa. I equally understand there is sudden interest of other well meaning investors wooing to inject more funds into G Cappa, hence the present administration may generally put construction companies at an edge.”

A look at the construction sector over last 9 months…makes information important.

Insurance, I think we all got that sector one right…

Banking, we mostly got wrong, in terms of performance, but I am sure the reasoning behind all our picks remain valid. Technical stuff is perhaps more relevant for this sector…

The food for thought, the way I see it is price of oil hit $160 this week- if it continues like, Nigeria is richer, all things considered, it is more construction work, oil and maritime sector does well…possibly insurance, banking holds. Remember African Command?

Add this type of information to a sound company / sector and wait....

X factor is the current global crisis!!! Frontier Markets are becoming a vogue… so beware. These fund manager could destroy the NSE.

Really worried about the X factor in our banks. Those guys ripped off Japan at the end of the 80's making the Nikkei index go down permanently by half. One needs to be on the look out at our NSE index for any similar signs. Pray it never happens here.

Default SMN Investment Challenge

I was a very nice challenge and from it , investors in this forum will have better ideas from the performances of the different participants on how to invest wisely.
I also think we should have another version for new guys in the stock investment, so as to increase their forsight AND ways to build a good portfolio.
