Lightbulb Investment Challenge

To all ye savvy and not so savvy investors,

I think we should run an annual investment challenge on this site a la Capital Times Investment Challenge (http://www.madison.com/tct/investment/ ), putting all the tips we get for free on this site to good use.
  • We could use similar rules but starting with about N100,000 virtual money per investor or investment club.
It should be on a buy and hold basis since we do not have the software to monitor a more sophisticated and realistic module.
  • You may form an investment club of no more than 5 members or you may go solo. Hint, hint, you may even end up with real investment clubs formed as a result of the performance of your virtual clubs.
  • We need a moderator to monitor and update the stats. Any takers?
  • The results should be presented in a similar manner to show the Challenger/Investment Club name, Value of shares, %Change and a link to the actual portfolio. Alternatively, we could split the results into two categories - Individual and Investment Club performance.
  • We need a start and end date. The start date should allow enough time for members to register their interest and the end date should be either 6 months or a year.
I can't think of anything else so by all means, feel free to blast the idea but be gentle...

Because of the zero level of risk, I think it will build up people's confidence in the Nigerian Capital Market and might even encourage people to go from virtual to real investors. C'mon, what do you say?

Miss Risky,

If you can technically set it up, I am in as well... You seem to have thought about it and I am sure you have the whole thing figured out. Lay it down on us...

Thanks for the spice...

Default Investment Challenge

@Bwalaman/Stockbear,

Thanks guys for your positive response. I'm not sure I have enough access rights on the forum to set it up. I was hoping the moderator/administrator of the site would pick this up but I'll be more than happy to do the job.

@Stockbear, my enthusiasm stems from the fact that about three years ago, a friend tried to convince me to invest in the Nigerian stock market and I was most reluctant to do so simply because I didn't think the volume of trade (as reported in the dailies) was high enough to affect price movements either up or down. Boy, was I wrong and am I kicking myself now. Instead I stuck to my old reliable and safe instrument - Investment Trusts! Not anymore though. I'm ready to break out and take some risks. Hence my screen name

Anyhoo, I'm just trying to do as much research and get as many tips as I can before plunging into this exciting new 'venture.'

This is a really good idea. We are thinking about how best to implement it. Any more thoughts on this?

Default Setting up the Challenge

Hi EIC,

Glad you like the idea and thanks for moving the thread. About implementation, I think we need the following:
  • A stockbroker who will provide the bid and offer prices as at the date of purchase and sale of the shares - unless you have access to these prices, including the relevant fees/charges.
  • The mid market price should then be used for valuation on a daily/weekly or whatever basis is agreed. I'm assuming the prices displayed on the 'ticker tape'/datafeed on this site is based on mid-market valuation as at the close of business. Please educate me if I'm wrong.
  • Updating the portfolio is a manual task and therefore needs the dedication of the Administrator (sorry EIC if that falls to you )
  • For the technical part, I cheated and used View>Source from the original Capital Times Challenge website to create a sample of what SMN Challenge might look like. As you can see, I'm kicking ass! First rename the attachment from .doc to .htm file type. I had problems uploading .htm directly.
  • The Challenge could be moved (again) from the forum to the main page where you might have better control for formatting and linking the pages and making it available to click-through traffic.

More contributions please...

I love this idea, miss risky is simply too sharp. I love to participate to this challenge. We learn more by practicals like this.

However since we are all contributing from different parts of the world, I will suggest we handle this individually, so that anybody that his portfolio is losing should not blame other members of the group.

For miss risky, you sound like like you can really give us a run for our money in this forum. May your ideas continue to flow.

Default More on setup

Hi c Kenneths,

I do try... I'm only sorry I didn't discover this site long before now. You guys are doing such an awesome job. Keep it up.

@EIC, to add more to the setup, I thought we should also consider the following:
  • Setup the page(s) for the Challenge and ensure all links and reporting work properly.
  • Formally invite forum members to register their interest within a specified time frame
  • At the end of the registration period, announce the successful challengers and the start date of the Challenge
  • Invite challengers to submit their stock selection of up to 10 from any sector, specifying the amounts to be invested in each. Any residual cash will also be shown in the valuation of the portfolio. This should also be done within a specified period.
  • At the end of the stock submission period, 'buy' stock or at least allocate the 'virtual' shares, applying any fees/transaction charges
  • Publish the first report on the start date, showing the valuation of the Challengers' portfolio.
The nail biting then begins!

Thanks Babs but I think the other guys you listed (and some others not mentioned) are more deserving of this accolade. I learn something new on this site almost everyday.

Smile What a great idea

Just a JJC on this site but very facinated on what i am seeing.
Pls count me in ! ! !

But miss risky, if i may ask, I hope NSE is the focus of the challenge.
Also how will portfolio review be captured in your design.

For better organisation, there may be need for some ground rules.

Pls you guys should keep up the good work

Hi Edmund,

NSE will certainly be the focus of the challenge. My example was just a copy/paste from the original site.

As for ground rules, any ideas are welcome but the EIC will have the final say I suppose.

The portfolio review will no doubt make for an interesting thread on the forum. We do have some excellent 'non-professional professional' members.
