Thanks Stockbear, I have May & Baker shares and let me share my decision to buy. First answer your question, for me it is a HOLD and mid-long term investment at the moment – note I have sold off 25% of what I put in, since I went in at IPO (4 naira) so I have pocketed some of the appreciation or taken back some of my initial investment .
Decision to buy: 1. Used some Buffett type thinking, know the company- my wife is a doctor and so May & Baker drugs have their share of prescription. I understand that they are marketing in hospitals. 2. Know the environment- there are less than 10 Pharmas listed- reckon in a developing country environment half of this sector has to make money (personally I think the other half has to break even). People are getting sick for reasons related to underdevelopment –sad but true. 3. If you look at the range of its drugs, it is “poor man’s” disease medicines they are making – and has interest in vaccines and HIV related stuff. 4. Vacines / HIV interest will bring in foreign interest (cash, technical expertise, technology transfers etc). The poor man’s part of it ties in interest on the volume and generics side of things (meaning Indian interest in one form or the other) - think global here… 5. They do other stuff as well, but all related to public health. 6. On the environment, again, notice the crack down by NAFDAC, this is a plus for the Pharmas. 7. Its fundamentals at IPO time (last time I read its details) did not have any red flags. So the company looked sound, its operating environment looked favourable and its potential for future earning looked good as well. Since it is about individual choices, I personally will hold what I have and not buy in to the market at this point. Main reasons: what will happens to NAFDAC after OBJ, will the crack down continue? Has Dr. Dora created institutional and cultural change to sustain the crackdown/reform in public health / fake / expired / pirated drugs? Will the FGN continue to stand behind the current interest on Vaccine and HIV? I believe a yes / positive answer on all these questions will continue to boost not only M&B, but the Pharms Sector as a whole… Bottom line, I consider the Pharma Sector as a defensive sector- I believe with sound “fundamentals” the companies in this sector will not lose money, all things equal, worst case – and will grow over time. Decision is still yours… |

May & Baker is gearing up to become a major producer of vaccines in Nigeria, so I hear from the news. To that end they are re-branding and re-engineering. For the medium term M&B will get you there.

l have shares in May and Baker, but unfortunately, the dividend declared for the year ending December 2006 have not been paid. This dividend was approved by shareholders at the AGM,which took place in Sheraton hotel lkeja in August 2007.
l have visited Afribank registrar on several occassions all to no avail.l hope the money is really available before dividend was declared. Glaxo Smith Kline PLC,paid us our dividend immediately after the AGM on 27th May 2008,at the venue of the AGM.l think that is how a company should be responsible to her Share holders. l hope Mr. Joseph Odumodu, the MD of May and baker will do something urgent about our dividend. |
