Default Technical Analysis

Is there anyone out there who has a tool he/she uses to do Technical analysis?

My believe is that it is better to teach a man/woman how to fish than give him fish. A lot of people are just looking for what is hot and when to quit but if we all know how to do the analysis, we will be able to contribute better.

I do it manually using excel spreadsheet at the moment and it is painful. If the NSE info was available in yahoo finance, a cheap software which sells for $4.99 on e-bay will have been able to pick it up free. See http://www.easystockdater.com/

I have written off to the NSE if they could provide a one month rolling market data on thier website in a csv format to download and guess what, no response yet.

I also came across this website below but got no response when I mailed them http://www.stocktrends.us/services.htm

But if anyone knows of a good tool and how to import historical data into it please share.

Windywendy : Sorry to pick on you , you said in another thread that you do this, do you have a software for this?

No problem.

I don't have any particular software. I do have an excel spreadsheet which I update everyday with daily prices and volumes (each tracked on separate sheets within the spreadsheet). That way, I can track both price and volume movements. I also track new highs and lows, price declines for stocks I'm looking to buy, etc, etc. This helps to some extent in my decision making. So if for instance I see volumes and prices for any particular stock rising simultaneously, then I know there's something going on, and this would trigger research on my part. Sometimes it could be something real, at other times it could just be investor sentiments.

A spreadsheet of daily stock updates is sent to me by my broker (FSDH) each day and I just copy and paste into my excel spreadsheet for each day. As you can imagine, it's a huge spreadsheet. It's painful, but rewarding.

You can get something like that by going to FSDH's website (I don't know the address by heart, but google it and you'll find it). Register to receive the updates and then on some idle weekend, you can log in, visit the archives section and do all the cutting and pasting you can. Hope this works.

Hi Windywendy,

Thanks for the quick response.

I do more or less the same but not as meticulous I guess.

It will just be good to have a good software that does this with automatic data update.

Anyway, it is good to know I am not the only one. I registered with FDSH, but for some reason the automatic email does not work, I have tried twice with no luck. But of course , I can log in myself and extract the data.

Hi

I use a subscription-based tool from BRA Limited (a Nigerian Data and Risk Management company which uses economic and financial information to advise its clients) .
Don't know how much subscription costs because I get it for free but I'll get details and post here at a later date

oh, almost forgot....the website to register for subscription is www.bralimited.com

I just visited the website. Is there a way one can have free access for a limited period of time so that it can be tested out before subscribing? Alternatively, can you tell us what your experience has been? How accurate is the data they use? thanks

Hi stockmarket voyeur,

Thanks for sharing this. I have also been to the website and I have sent them a mail, Please see my questions to them below, will be grateful if you can answer them based on your experience.

***********************
I would like to know more about the capability of one of the products listed on your website (CINDY).

As it is a bit difficult to know the capability from the little description on the site, I was wondering if there is a way this could be demonstrated before one commits to the subscription or if a time based test access can be granted.

A tool which can enable one do sound technical analysis is what I am after.

Specifically,

A; does it support trend analysis?

B: can one create charts (1wk, 1 month, 6 months etc)?

C: Can one do moving averages etc?

There used to be a site I was using, these guys do some bit of analysis and performance tracking. You fill in the qty of your holdings and everyday after closure of trades, they give you the exact value of your investments, also giving you statistical history on any stock you choose on their website, they gave us three months free service, then they cut the service off and only gave us daily prices. They wanted anybody interested in the full portfolio research to pay 24000 for annual subscription.

Suddenly the whole package disapeared, I can't get it when I log on, something like an error message and an unresolved host prolem.

The site is portfolioinsight.net and its affiliated with Financial standards newspaper.

I also use an excel spread sheet to track prices that I download from FSDH on a daily basis. It gives me a cue on market direction and warns me when I should be loading or offloading.

I got a reply back from NSE and I was advised to continue with my excel sheet whilst downloading the data in the cumbersome way.

However NSE was very nice and helpful and even willing to send me data which technolgy is still preventing.

I am also talking to the founder of firstGlobalselect.com in the US, if and when I get any joy I will share here.

What I see in all these discussion is a business opportnity. Get data legally from NSE Website by paying the annual access dues. Convert it to the format that Yahoo finance and others provide. Code the algorithms and start to sell to Nigerians with a healthy mark up! I can even ask IBTC too write me a glossy business plan and call for private placements which will be oversubscribed.

Hello guys,
I've been reading and I must confess I've really learnt alot. Though I'm still a newbie but I have a strong zeal to learn. Many thanks to the Ckenneths, Paragon, Windy windy, stockbear, alanblow, etc. Pls do keep it up.
Ckenneth and wendy wendy, I'd like to ask for a template of ur excel sheet so I can keep my own records/data as well. I believe many of us are also interested in this.
Many thanks and pls do keep up the good job

Two weeks ago, I read the posts from Windy Wendy and C. Kenneths and decided to imitate. This time though I believe I came up with a solution to the cumbersome nature of cutting and pasting excel sheets. I developed an access database with the same headings as that used by FSDH and then imported all sheets into access. So I do not have my data cluttered up. As for the cutting and pasting well a simple macro built into excel automates the task of selecting the required fields to import. I then use pivot tables and charts in excel to analyse my data since SMAs do not seem to be available in access. Within three days I have been able to save all data from the NSE from Jan till date and by altering the names of the companies, I am able to immediately observe stocktrends over time.

I have attached a sample of the results I get showing the impressive results from JAPAUL this year with a 15 day moving average line possibly proving to be a line of support. Stock prices are in blue and stock volume in red.

Thank you Kenneth, Windy W, Miss Risky, Stockbear etc for your selflessness in sharing information.
