What are the raw materials used in making glass?

What is the difference between the type of glass used in making bottles and those used making medical and science apparatus.

Because it appears most of the beakers, test tubes, measuring cylinders used in science laboratories are imported and the prices had gone up by about 250 to 300%.

I bought 500ml beaker for N400 in April 2015, the same beaker is now sold for N1200 because of the exchange rate of dollar to Naira.

Does that mean Beta Glass can not make beaker, I doubt if the cost of production of the beaker is up to N150.

Just found out that the raw material used in making glass is sand.

Glass

If that is the case, I see no reason why we should import glass ware into the country.

This company can make good money, if they can only identify other things that glass can be used for.

I have a government approved secondary school in Lagos, WAEC will start on 1st April 2016.

My teachers gave me a list of some of the apparatus that will be needed for the exam, and found out that some of the glass wares used in laboratory had increased by about 300% compared to the price paid last year.

Measuring cylinder, which was bought for N550 last years is now sold for N1800.

How come glass wares are imported into the country, I think Beta Glass should be in a position to make some of thse things.

May be the volume cannot support the cost of the requisite furnace.

Do you know the number of secondary schools, polytechnics and Universities in Nigeria. These institutions of learning must have chemistry, biology and physics laboratories. Do you know the number of medical laboratories we have in Nigeria.

The young guy who supplies me test-tubes, pipetes, beakers, measuring cylinders, conical flask etc, built a house from the importation of glass wares used in laboratories.

Oga mi, it is not that simple sha. You can bet that Beta Glass knows about the market for glass wares in laboratories in Nigeria.

The company appears not to be interested because they know the obvious, which is that except you are a Dangote (who will venture into that line of business and get all the govt protection), you will lose money manufacturing that thing in Nigeria

This is sad but true

But Beta Glass which started as Toyo Glass had been in Nigeria manufacturing hollow glassware long before Dangote dreamt of venturing into manufacturing

Why attempt a distortion of historical fact?

By the way, are you sure of the bold? In my opinion, lab glasswares should be much more easier to produce than Beta"s packaging range of glasswares.
