The money is not really going to Etisalat. It is more of an offer for sale by the existing Nigerian Shareholders. |

Etisalat, the fastest growing telecom company worldwide and largest telecommunications service provider in Africa and the Middle East, has announced the acquisition of 45 per cent stake in Swan Telecom Private Limited, a recently licensed mobile operator in India . The Group committed $900m to further extend its presence in Asia in addition to its present operations in countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan and Indonesia . Commenting on the transaction, Mr. Mohammad Hassan Omran, the Chairman, Etisalat Group, said, “Our entry in India, one of the largest and fastest growing mobile markets in the world today, marks an acceleration of our expansion strategy and brings to us an opportunity, which matches the scale of our ambitions. We are truly excited by the partnership with the DB Group and the prospect of building Swan Telecom into a leading telecom operator, emulating the successes we have achieved in similar situations elsewhere”. India is one of the world’s fastest-growing mobile markets, has nearly 300 million mobile phone users, which are expected to double in the next three to four years, according to industry analysts. Swan Telecom holds Universal Access Service licences in 13 telecom service areas in India, and is in the process of acquiring UASL licences in an additional two telecom service areas. Together, these licences enable the company to provide a full spectrum of telecom services, including GSM services, covering a population of over 900 million across India Commenting on this development, Etisalat Nigeria Chairman, Mr. Hakeem Bello -Osagie, said, “I am proud of the giant strides Etisalat is making globally. As Etisalat is just about set to launch commercial services in Nigeria, we are in a stronger position than ever before to leverage the synergy of Etisalat’s international operations to offer Nigerians high quality telecommunications services.” Over the years, Etisalat has continued to build its reputation of high growth and innovative technology offerings across the world, and now serves an aggregate of 64 million subscribers world-wide, rated the fastest growing telco worldwide. |

Home News Etisalat targets $10 monthly revenue from Nigerian subscribers
Etisalat targets $10 monthly revenue from Nigerian subscribers Thursday, 23 October 2008 00:18 Bill Okonedo User Rating: / 0 PoorBest Etisalat, Nigeria’s fifth GSM operator, estimates it will make a monthly average revenue per user (ARPU) of about 10 dollars from its Nigeria operations which kick off commercially next week. Mohammad Omran, Etisalat Group’s chairman, gave the projection while speaking at the company’s headquarters in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. He was addressing journalists at the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition and Conference (Gitex) holding in Dubai. The Middle East ICT exhibition where he highlighted his company’s expectations from and focus on the Nigerian market is tagged Gitex. Outlining his company’s expectations from its Nigeria undertaking, Omran observed that ARPU levels in Nigeria were higher than in many other African countries and that by its operation in Nigeria Etisalat was “gaining a strategic foothold in Africa’s most exciting market.” He observed that Nigeria’s nearness to Etisalat’s other operations in West Africa and the Sudan made for enhanced connectivity options and increased the Nigerian network’s resilience, allowing it to access competitive services from Etisalat’s carrier and wholesale division. “We are confident that our Nigerian operations will grow quickly, especially with the low penetration, large population and strengthening economy,” he said. He stressed that Etisalat’s coverage in Nigeria would be wide spread at launch reaching major population centres and would quickly spread and encompass the entire country, including the under-served hinterland. This is one of the benchmarks on which Etisalat is renowned in every country in which it operates, he added. Etisalat’s network in Nigeria is at the final stages of testing prior to public launch. “We are now preparing for commercial launch, which will come soon,” Omran stated. Competition, Omran said, “creates a healthy environment for the businesses involved, as well as for the customer and when we enter a new market we offer services and telecommunications solutions based on intensive studies and market research relying on our experience as well as the expertise of our long-term partners.” He said the network’s competitive edge would be its emphasis on customised services tailored at the needs of specific audiences. Etisalat is one of the major sponsors of the Gitex event in Dubai where it is showcasing a number of innovative services and products which officials say will be made available to the Nigerian market. They include an enhanced mobile TV which provides about 20 channels. The service allows both prepaid and postpaid customers to view the selected television channels live on their 3/3.5G enabled handsets. It also offers mobile broadband on High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) platform with speed levels from 2MB to 10GB. Other services which Etisalat hopes to introduce to the Nigerian market include voice SMS, Etisalat online services, Mobilecam, a wireless camera that can be placed anywhere and accessed from 3G enabled mobile phones.

Etisalat rolls out services in seven cities
By Jonah Iboma Published: Friday, 24 Oct 2008 Nigeria’s fifth Global System for Mobile communications service provider, Etisalat, on Thursday commenced service with a promise to progressively rollout in seven states next week. The cities are Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, Port-Harcourt, Ibadan and Ogbomosho. The Vice-President, Marketing, Etisalat Nigeria, Mr. Wael Ammar, said at a media conference that the firm intended to deliver high quality and innovative services across the country as it had done in other countries where it operated. He said that the company’s aggressive network rollout would continue swiftly to a second phase covering several other cities and enhancing coverage in already launched areas. He said, “I am extremely delighted to welcome Nigerians to the 74 million strong global customer base across 17 countries in the world. Indeed, Etisalat Nigeria is in a unique position to offer Nigerians competitive access to a world-class suite of Etisalat products and services covering extensive voice, data and innovative value added services.” He noted that no modern economy could be fully sustained in today’s world without a reliable and solid telecommunications infrastructure as access to this was critical to the development of all aspects of the national economy. Etisalat continues to push the frontiers and has set for itself a target to stand among the 10 largest telecommunications companies in the world by 2010. The firm also announced the introduction of its flagship products, Easy Starter, a pre-paid package. Easy starter, among others, offers Homezone feature, which enables subscribers to choose the zone where they spend most of their time in order to enjoy lower call tariffs. Of Course what you stated is exactly what they want to do but the concern here is that hope they are not out to Rip investors off thier money by making huge profit all in the name of ''OFFER FOR SALE''. Well that is for the Investor to find out before making any move. Starcomms Plc & NEGRIS (ENCON) Ltd are Recent Examples of how Dangerous moves like this can be. Every Investor I Know that invested in Starcomms are not happy with thier decision because they have now realised how expensive they paid for the stock when faced with current market condition. Watching the value of a stock you bought going down on a daily basis when it is listed on the Exchange should call for concern whereas the man that sold it to you all in the name of Diversifying is smiling to his Bank. |
